Returned it without a hassel. Great piece of hardware but I could not use it with my "Antique" Audio/Video system.
This receiver carries only video, non included opticla coax is required for DVD player and optional optical digital calbe is required to crry sat TV, only the video is carried throught the HDMI - very misleading spend a few more bucks and get the audio with the video. HDMI is supposed to carry both video AND audio signals.
The volume is not earth shattering but that can actually be a good thing as there does not seem to be any distortion. I eventually found this out after searching on line. I bought this based on the Sony name but after doing so it reminded my why I don't normally buy Sony products. The set up is very confusing and the biggest con is you have to use a TOS link cable to get sound.
See, I already had the same speakers he had but because his receiver was better than mine his speakers played louder and fuller than mine.I currently have the Sony ss-cn5000 for center and the ss-f5000 for fronts and an old pair of technics bookshelf speakers for rears. As a former owner of a htib who was once blissfully unaware of what I was missing in sound quality. I will then have a quality system that didn't cost more than a thousand but completely captivated my family and guests when watching programs in my home theater I will be upgrading my fronts to the ss-f7000 and moving the f5000 to the rear this week. I am very pleased with this receiver's options and performance. I knew exactly what to expect buying this since a friend of mine already owned one and actually 'recruited' me to set up and wire it with his new Sony speakers and new HDTV set and video games.I was so blown away with the sound quality and volume of his system I knew I had to get one.
The only reason i'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is for two reasons. My suggestion is, if it's in your budget then get it. I'm using some speakers from my Panasonic dvd surround sound system and it never sounded better. It's real annoying when you're playing Resistance 2. I didn't do any research on A/V receviers when I first started looking and got stuck with a crappy recevier.
Don't know why it's doing this, but I want a more expensive and better unit anyway. it was worth it. So i'll be taking it back and upgrading yet again. If you can afford a little more, then go with a better, more expensive unit. First:It's HDMI pass-through. You have to get an optical cable for the sound, no biggey.
After I took it back to my local Best Buy, I actually started doing research on some. The sound coming out of this unit is fantastic. Second:The video has gone out 4 times so far. This one, I thought, was the best one for my situation. Which means, video comes through the HDMI ports but no audio. I have my PS3 hooked up to it and couldn't be more satisfied.
I did have to go buy a powered sub, but for [.]. I'm sure there are better, more expensive systems out there, but if you're looking at this one then they're not for you.
